ROOTY HILL,New South Wales, Australia (16/04/2007) FILIPINO NATIONAL MASTER Homer "Bong" Cunanan dominated the just concluded Rooty Hill RSL Chess Club active chess weekly tournament late Monday at the RSL Club here. Cunanan, the pride of Pampanga bested the 18 man-field, a six round Swiss system tournament in the event organize by Rooty Hill RSL Chess Club headed by Peter Cassettari.

Actually, Cunanan also the head coach of multi-titled San Sebastian College notch 5.5 points on account of five wins and one draw, the same output of fellow national master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr., however the former (Cunanan) had a superior tie break points to take home the title. The duo (Cunanan and Bernardino) finished undefeated as their game ended in a fighting draw in the early round.

Cunanan whose stint here is being supported by Pampanga governor Mark Lapid, Mabalacat, Pampanga mayor Marino "Boking" Morales and National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). Earlier this, Cunanan adjudged over-all third place Filipino finisher in the inauguration of Sydney International Open Chess Championships at the Parramata town hall last Saturday. Cunanan, almost inched closer to obtain his first International Master(IM) results/ norms in the SIO (Sydney International Open) but failed after losing his eight round matches against IM Paul Garnett from New Zealand. He finished with 5.0 points in the field of 143.
