The following report for the Under 1900s comes from Leo Tenorio. Thanks, Leo, it's appreciated.
Team captains: Why not write a report for your team so we can include it here as well?
U1900 3 def. Mounties 1 –22/03/07.
Mounties U/1700 1 - 3 Rooty Hill U/1900
I'm not a journalist/columnist but I'd like to share to you what happened
last night.
Before the game started, we were aiming for a clean sweep with Mounties.
On board 1, Noel was impressive! He captured a piece early in game. Then
he demolished Tode with a queen sacrifice. Tode resigned/shocked!
That's the best games I've ever seen for Noel. He brought his game to a
highest level! Hope that he will submit the his game to you David.
On board 2, I had the party of my life, finishing off Rick in just 17 moves! I can reveal to you that at first I didn't want to play because I had a terrible headache. I rang Robert Ambalong if he could fill in for me. But he said he had a tooth extaction and couldn't play. So I just turned up pretending that I'm well. I don't want to lose the game. I just want to play as easy as I can without thinking too much. So a draw result would be good enough for me considering my condition. Rick made one blunder after another. I surprised myself that I finished off Rick that early. With that win my headache was suddenly gone! Good game also.
On board 3, After finishing my game early, I shifted to Levi's game. Boy, I can tell you, Levi was also in good form. In the middle game he sacrificed a piece to launch a mating attack on Dragan's. Dragan was cramming for cover but couldn't avoid a checkmate or lost a queen. Very impressive also. I think Levi is just warming up for the SIO tournament. I told Levi to submit his game to David.
And we were right on target after posting a very quick 3-0 result in the top 3 broads. The clean sweep appears to be looming!
(Top three Broads, Leo? Must be women's chess. . .)
This now left Frank Barisic who was battling toe to toe with Anthony Villanueva. In the middle game Frank gained quality advantage and was in the position of wrapping it up with a mating attack in the end game. When his clock was dwindling down, he asked us if there is an extra time. We said "yes after finishing the first time control". However, he wasn't aware of the rules that he needs to make in the first time control of 40 moves in 75 minutes. With less than 5 minutes left on his clock he was still 7 moves short to reach 40. Frank was still taking it easy, still writing his moves (and his opponent's moves as well) whereas he could just ticked his moves on the record sheet and blitz his moves to reach 40 thereby avoiding time forfeit. Not knowing of these rules his clock fell. He was 2 moves short! He argued that another 15 extra minutes should be given to him. But me and Levi explained everything to him about the rules. He was very disappointed. We understand his feelings. Good result for our team but bad luck for Frank. Could have been 4-0!
In our first match with Mounties, Noel was winning but his phone accidentally turned on! We lost a point.
Our second match last night, Frank was winning but unaware of the time control rules, we again lost another point. Altogether we've given away 2 points to the same team. We are at jink with Mounties! I just hope that nothing happens when we play them again next time. Overall, I'm still happy with the result.
Here's another great report from Leo. Congrats to the U1900s who won their division.
LeoTenorio and Levi Descallar
Before this match our team just need 1 point to clinch and retain for the Division B title. We were confident that we could win the match with Mounties. But the question was - the score. Also, I have told my teammates not to get complacent. Not to take Mounties lightly. In chess anything can happen. An upset result is alway possible.
On board 1 Noel Mangrobanghas readied himself for the last time. Still fresh on his mind the he lost his game to Rick Carballo not because of a losing position but because his phone accidentally turned on. He wants to erase that memory. He wants to win in yet another styling fashion. Unfortunately, his opponent Todd Cvetskowski didn't turn up. Noel didn't get his wish. But he wasn't upset as he made no sweat on the game. Result Rooty Hill 1f -0f Mounties.
On board 2 Before the game started my opponent Rick kept on telling me that I haven't won against him in our last 3 lightning games. To be honest I don't remember any. So there was a bit of sledging. Maybe he wants to keep my morale low. But to no avail. It just made me pumped. I dominated totally from the opening to the end. I didn't give him any chance at all. I crushed in him 37 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening. Result: Rooty Hill 2 - 0
Mounties.
On board 3 Levi Fescallar again defeated Dragan in a superb rook and pawn ending. didn't get to check the opening. But when half way of the match the game was already in his favour. At the end of play Levi's pawn was unstoppable for promotion forcing Dragan to stop the game to avoid any further humiliation. This was Levi's 2nd straight win against Dragan Djukovic in this tournament. Overall Levi's record is 5 W 1L. As a result of his achievement he is the best player of Division B. Result : Rooty Hill 3 - 0
Mounties.
On board 4 Frank Barisic. Finally, comes to this end. Still haunted of
what happened to him last time when he played and lost the game to Anthony Villanueva. Despite already winning, he lost by a time forfeit. He wasn't happy, very much upset. Last night, he told me before the game that its not going to happen again. When I looked at their board, Frank's got a very commanding/ winnable position. No matter which angle I look at no way for Anthony to stage a counter attack or even salvage a draw. True to his words there wasn't a repeat of bitter memories. The monkey was off his back. Frank threatens to checkmate Anthony in 2 moves. Anthony later resigned. Result: Rooty Hill 4 - 0 Mounties.

We have successfully defended our title. But this one was very tough considering that our line up (combined ratings) were not as better as last year. We all thought that Parramatta was the better team. But we beat them! I can now say that rating doesn't count a lot. Perform above par and success is waiting. And that's what we did! We gave our best! This is a great team! Well done!
