India wins World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad
India has emerged the overall winner in the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad held in Singapore. It beat opponents from 24 countries. It won seven rounds, drew two and lost one of the 10 rounds tournament.
The Indians started well defeating United States 4-0 and following that up by trouncing top seeds Hungary 3.5-0.5. The team lost 1-3 to the Philippines in the seventh round but came back to win the last three matches finishing on top with 28 points out of 40 to romp home the gold..
The nine-day tournament, which started on 4 August, saw a record 34 teams taking part. Australia send 4 teams which finished 5th, 8th, 10th and 21th. The players comprising the team are:

On the individual performances, the honour goes to Wesley So of the Philippines, the only IM on the tournament. He could have a perfect 10 score, had he not have to halve the point in the ninth round against Ly Moulthun. Click here to view the game .
