Round 1: The Knights started in a blaze of glory with a 4-0 whitewash of Manly. After a couple of rounds it was obvious that they, along with Wests A (4) and St. George (3) were going to be serious contenders for the title.

Round 2: It was St. George’s turn, for a big win and their 4 points (also against Manly) took them to the lead. The Knights gave Wests B some encouragement, losing to them by half a point. (For away games, three of us meet at Rooty Hill and travel in one car, thus sharing the driving by rotating vehicles.)
Scores: St. George 7, Wests A 6, Rooty Hill 5.5, Wests B 2.5.

Round 3: The Knights drew 2-2 with Wests A and for the moment dropped back to be 3 points from the lead. (I lost to Adrian Miranda - (a 10 year old junior). I missed the correct move by a whisker! Our team, over the years, have done very poorly against the juniors when we have come across them. In an earlier match Sean Pyke lost to Angela Song, whilst Rolando lost Raymond Song.) In this round Manly picked up their first half point.
Scores: St. George 10.5, Wests A 8, Rooty Hill 7.5, Norths 5.5, then Wests B on 3.

Round 4: The Knights travelled to the Taj Mahal for Round 4 and bearded the Dragon in his lair. (It was a treat to see Ian Rogers playing there that evening.) It was St. George’s first loss of the tournament and, at 3-1, it was decisive.( Click this to see Allan’s game against Henry Too - it was a marathon) Now the battle for the lead was getting tight.
Scores: St. George, Wests A 11, Rooty Hill 10.5. Norths 7.5, Wests B 6, and Manly 1.5

Round 5: The Knights put an end to North Sydney’s run with another 4-0 win. The other top teams, St. George and Wests A, had a 2-2 draw. Standings at the half way point saw the Knights on top for the first time.
Scores: Rooty Hill 14.5, St. George 13.5, Wests A 13, Wests B 9, Norths 6.5, and Manly 2.5.

Bill Herreros - Allan Butler

Round 6: When St. George scored 3.5 over Norths they were always going to get the lead back. The Knights shared the points with Manly 2-2 and Wests A drew with Wests B. Both those matches had been 4-0 wins in the first round and, clearly, both Manly and Wests B were finding their feet. (On the way over we nearly crashed whilst changing lanes on the Pacific Highway. Funnily enough it was at almost the same as our near-miss last year.)
Scores: St. George 17, Rooty Hill 16.5, Wests A 15, Wests B 11, North Sydney 8, Manly 4.5.

Round 7: Wests B had inflicted the Knights’ only defeat so far but they weren’t allowed a repeat performance. Rooty Hill crushed them 3-1 to snatch back the lead. The Dragons managed only 2 points against Manly who were struggling at the bottom of the table, while Wests A went down big time (3-1) to North Sydney. The stage was now set for an exciting finish to the competition.
Scores: Rooty Hill 19.5, St. George 19, Wests A 16, Wests B 12, Norths 11, Manly 6.5.

Round 8: Rooty Hill went into this round half a point ahead of St. George and looked very good indeed when they beat Wests A 3-1. It wasn’t quite enough because St. George walloped Wests B 4-0 and once again the lead switched in this see-sawing battle. Manly, trailing on 6.5, had their best result so far when they surprised Norths 3.5-.5.
Scores: St. George 23, Rooty Hill 22.5, Wests A 17, Wests B 12, North Sydney 11.5, Manly 10.

Rolando Gonzales - George Smith

Round 9: In a clash of the titans Rooty Hill took on competition leaders St. George. As in the first round, the Knights won 3-1 to storm back into the lead with one week left. (This was a great win!) Wests A and Manly played a 2-2 draw and North Sydney beat Wests B 3-1.
Scores: Rooty Hill 25.5, St. George 24, Wests A 19, North Sydney 14.5, Wests B 13, Manly 12.

Round 10: Only two teams could now win and although St. George gave it a great shot by defeating Wests A 3-1, Rooty Hill were too good and their victory over North Sydney won them the competition. (It’s always tougher at the away games because most teams have their stronger players at home. Many of them don’t seem to travel away as much, whilst our team was consistently the same four right through the comp.) Congratulations to the whole team.
Final Scores: Rooty Hill Knights 28, St. George 27, Wests A 20, North Sydney and Wests B 16, Manly 14.

Performance Award: Congratulations to Rolando Gonzales who top-scored in the division with 8 points from a possible 10. Right behind him were Allan Butler and Juan Congdon on 7.5.
