![]() Rooty Hill Open Champion Tony Bouchaaya |
In a field of about thirty-seven (the final number is not quite certain) we have nine players rated above 1800. They are Tony Bouchaaya 2126, Brian Jones 2124, David Dick 1986, Jim Holland 1913, Peter Cassettari 1874, Leonardo Tenorio 1851, Noel Mangrobang 1850p, Jeff Cabilin 1821, and Joe Ymalay 1805. It should be a good competition.
Round 1: It would be a disappointing first round that had no upsets and a few players went home wearing smiles that were larger than their ratings. Eddie Quesada (1346) beat Rick Carballo (1617) but was upstaged a little by Rolando Gonzales (1386) who beat Henry Rara (1679). Not to be outdone, Carrie Evans (1409) drew with Jeff Cabilin (1821) HERE'S THE GAME. Newcomer Ross Smith put up a tough fight against City of Sydney U1700 Champion Joshua Christensen but Josh had too much experience—he won not only the CoS U1700 this year but took out the Doeberl Minor as well.
Round 2: This field of 38 is sorting itself out quickly and only seven players remain on two points. Of those the big surprise was Rolando Gonzales who has done it the hard way. Following his upset win in Round 1 he claimed an even bigger scalp this week in defeating Joe Ymalay (1805). The other leaders are Tony Bouchaaya, Jim Holland, Peter Cassettari, Brian Jones, David Dick and Leo Tenorio.
Ken MacGillivray must have been practising voodoo, not chess, because his first opponent Noel Mangrobang last week offered a draw before going home sick, and this week Carrie Evans had an attack of the collywobbles and had to forfeit, leaving Ken on 1½/2.
Brian Jones had an interesting win against Munir Anjum who dropped behind in development and went down to an entertaining mate. HERE'S THE GAME.
David Dick's exchange sacrifice and strong g2 bishop enabled him to dominate the queenside against Joshua Christensen CLICK HERE.
After beating up Rhys last week I had to face his dad, Jim Holland this time and he had little difficulty upholding the family honour. His passed d and e pawns forced my brain into meltdown and my position into lockdown. HERE IT IS.
Round 3: After three rounds it's appropriate that three players have emerged from the pack: Tony Bouchaaya beat Jim Holland to claim the lead but is hotly pursued by Jeff Cabilin and Eddie Quesada, both on 2½. Eddie is having a great year: he scored well in the WSCP and followed that up with good results in the Grade Matches. He meets Tony on top board next week. Kaz Kulpa (1517) beat Joe Ymalay (1805) and is looming as a threat.
In other games, Noel Mangrobang beat Joshua Christensen (who will be very dangerous in his remaining six games); Munir Anjum won a tough battle against Stephen Stipic; Rick Carballo won a brevity against Carrie Evans; and Peter Watts scored a useful draw against Henry Rara who is uncharacteristically languishing on half a point. The only game available this week is my win against David Beveridge. My little German friend (Fritz) awarded a ?? for my 25...Qc2+. See what you think: CLICK HERE.
Round 4: There were a few wins against the ratings this week. Rolando Gonzales (1386) got the better of Norrie Tique (1670), John Yao (1460) beat Levi Descallar (1736) and George Smit (1486) beat Henry Rara (1679).
At the sharp end Tony Bouchaaya is on 4/4 but only half a point ahead of David Dick who took a bye in Round 3. Brian Jones is also thereabouts but took two half point byes to play an international tournament in Asia.
One of the most interesting games of the night was Jim Holland's win against Jeff Cabilin. Jeff, with the black pieces, had an untouchable knight on e3 while Jim's stay-at-home bishop had about as much fire-power as a blocked pawn. Jim won the game and the turn-around would have been interesting: it may have needed an exchange sacrifice to mobilise his forces.
Round 5: Tony Bouchaaya, on five points, is a point clear of Noel Mangrobang, Leo Tenorio and Brian Jones all on 4. Brian dropped his point with a pair of half point byes while competing in Asian tournaments for the past fortnight; he gets his chance to challenge Tony next week. There were four draws between boards 11 and 15 this week: Frank Kresinger/Munir Anjum, John Yao/David Evans, Shane Burgess/Allan Butler, and Rhys Holland/George Smit. The BB game (BB = Burgess/Butler) was a friendly affair when Shane offered Allan a draw because he looked sick—then sat there and thrashed him because he had to wait around to drive me home.
On a less pleasant note we're getting too many forfeits from the tail enders. Out-of-form Henry Rara had managed only half a point from four games and forced Carrie Evans to sit for an hour to claim the forfeit, while neither David Beveridge nor Steven Stipic bothered to turn up for their bottom-of-the-table clash. Please do the right thing and notify Peter if you plan to forfeit. He can then either re-draw the round or notify your opponent who would otherwise have to come to the club and twiddle his thumbs.
Round 6: Tony Bouchaaya and Brian Jones drew their Board 1 clash this week leaving Tony on top with 5½ ahead of Leo Tenorio on 5 and David Dick on 4½.
Leo slipped into his "Terminator" mode this week and crushed Noel Mangrobang in a very entertaining game. SEE IT HERE. Rolando Gonzales had an interesting draw against Peter Cassettari: Peter held a two-pawn advantage but, with seconds left on his clock, was forced to give perpetual check. Carrie Evans also drew against the ratings when Stevan Jovanovic's bishop found itself caught in the confessional while Carrie's bishop pair controlled the open lines while the major pieces were unable to penetrate the locked pawns. HERE IT IS.
Other winners included Jeff Cabilin, Jim Holland, and Ken MacGillivray who had a good win against the very strong Joshua Christensen.
Round 7: Tony Bouchaaya beat Leo Tenorio, maintaining his one point lead at the top of the table. Brian Jones picked up a forfeit on Board 2 and the Board 3 clash between Jim Holland and David Dick is still to be played.
There were draws on the next three boards between Noel Mangrobang/Joe Ymalay, Peter Cassettari/David Evans and Rick Carballo/Frank Barisic. Rick and Frank had an interesting end game, both with a rook and Rick with a pawn.
The exchange down, Allan Butler set a trap for Frank Kresinger who could apparently have played 1.QxB, PxQ, 2. RxQ when the pinned pawn moved. The problem was that Frank's rook would not then have been able to get back to stop the passed pawn. Frank declined the offer and won anyway.
Yama Mahmoodi had a good win against Muhammed Buza, Munir Anjum beat Bill Herreros and Eddie Quesada defeated George Smit.
Round 8: Tony Bouchaaya scored a painless, if frustrating, point when Jeff Cabilin failed to show for their Board 1 clash while Stevan Jovanovic picked up an equally easy point from the absent Henry Rara. Tony, on 6.5/8, leads by a clear point from David Dick and Brian Jones, while Leo Tenorio is next on 5.
Most of the games went according to the ratings this week with the exception of Frank Barisic's win on time against Jim Holland.
Round 9: Tony Bouchaaya drew his last round game with Joe Ymalay to win this year's Rooty Hill Open. Noel Mangrobang still unrated and a most interesting player beat David Dick (1986), and those two finished equal second on 6.5 with Brian Jones who beat Leo Tenorio.
