Credit Suisse Blitz – Zurich

To celebrate its 150th anniversary the Credit Suisse Bank this week (August 22) sponsored a blitz chess match between four greats of the game—Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Judit Polgar and the aging Viktor Korchnoi who, in his twilight years, still commands a FIDE rating of 2600.

Two games were to be played against each opponent, once with black, once with white.

In a result reminiscent of their epic World Championship battles Kasparov and Karpov drew their two games and remained tied for first when Kasparov drew with Korchnoi and Karpov drew with Polgar. They shared first place with 4½/6.

Polgar won both her games against Korchnoi to finish with 2½ points. Korchnoi, formerly a chess giant, managed only ½, but the opposition doesn't get stronger than this.

After the blitz matches all four players gave 20-board simuls.

Chessbase News ran a feature on the match with photographs and games. It can be viewed HERE.
