Chess at the Commonwealth Games

There have been rumours that chess will be a demonstration sport at this year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. This is not true, but it will certainly be featured in the Athletes' Village on March 18, 22 and 25.

The following information was received from Gary Wastell, President of Chess Victoria.

Games organisers have invited a number of organisations to provide some entertainment/recreation options for inhabitants of the Games Village.

They are not providing any financial assistance and won't permit us to promote sponsors of our own (if we had them) because of their own sponsorship deals. So we have the choice between being involved without a budget in a high profile event, or not being involved.

Our plan is to have a continuous simul going from morning to evening on each of the three days on which have been invited i.e. Saturday March 18, Wednesday March 22 and Saturday March 25.

With the Olympiad coming up, we are hoping to get permission to appeal for donations, so we are in the process of inviting likely local Olympiad team members to strut their stuff. To date David Smerdon, Anastasia Sorokina and Leonid Sandler have agreed to help out.

Since the aim of the exercise is to entertain the athletes, not the masses, the activity is to take place inside the athletes' village which, as I understand it, is not generally open to the public. Indeed, our guys are going to be subject to quite a bit of security processing to get in there, so I'm not sure of the extent to which we will be able to capitalise on the opportunity from a publicity point of view.

Gary is hoping to know more by early March and, if so, will publicise it in the ACF Newsletter. (If you don't get the free ACF newsletter you can subscribe by clicking the link on our home page.)
