A. Korotylev - G. Kasparov

The 57th Russian Chess Championship was played from November 15-27, 2004.

A round-robin with a prize fund equivalent to $A162,000, it brought together some of the world's strongest players.

Garry Kasparov dominated the event with five wins and five draws to finish 1.5 points ahead of second-placed Alexander Grischuk.

It was his first tournament success for a couple of years.

Kasparov pointed out that he had never won a Russian Championship though he has certainly shared first place in at least two USSR Championships.   This was the first time he had played in the Russia-only event.

The win answers those critics who claim that Garry has lost some of his old fire. Whether or not he holds the world title he can still lay claim to being the world's top player. Alexey Dreev finished third on 5.5 with Morozevich, Motylev, Svidler and Bareev close behind on 5.
