On Sunday, March 12 Rooty Hill Chess Club, in conjunction with Blacktown City Council, hosted a Junior Chess Tournament at Bowman Hall, Blacktown. Of the original thirty-four entrants, eleven failed to show but they were replaced by fourteen people who registered on the day making thirty-seven in all.
Flawlessly conducted by DOP Richard Gastineau-Hills, it was a day enjoyed by players and parents alike. The competition for trophies and medallions was strong and in spite of some very experienced players in the field the results were encouraging for everybody.
The winner was 17 year-old Bob Liang ahead of the very experienced 9 year-old Joshua Lau and a dead-heat for third between another 17 year-old, Michael Ngo and a sensational 7 year-old having his first tournament, Andrew Pan. Adrian Jansen, Rooty Hill's only entrant, was next with 7/10. Congratulations to all.
Asked to compare the tournament to the events he normally plays, Joshua Lau said, "There aren't as many people but the hall is big and the prizes look good." Indeed, the word most often heard as the kids examined the gold, silver and bronze Centenary medallions was, "C-o-o-ol!"
Parramatta stalwart Bob Sewell who coaches juniors was there with some of his protegé's said, "This is an ideal sort of tournament to introduce kids to tournament chess. A lot of them are having their first tournament."
Following is the text of our press release to the local papers:

Chess tournaments, like libraries, are traditionally quiet places—unless they are junior tournaments. The Blacktown Centenary Chess tournament, hosted jointly by Blacktown City Council and Rooty Hill RSL Chess Club was no exception as 37 competitors aged from 6 to 17 fought for the crown in a cheerful noisy atmosphere where the continual murmur of conversation was highlighted by chairs scraping restlessly, and the click of chess clocks hammered mightily by enthusiastic players. Sometimes opponents seemed mismatched as when experienced tournament players like 17 year-old Bob Liang faced first-timer 7 year-old Andrew Pan but the appearance could be deceptive, Playing virtually lightning chess Andrew made his older opponent work hard for victory.
Bob won the tournament comfortably with 9.5 points from ten games, ahead of 9 year-old Joshua Lau, who has many senior tournaments under his belt, and a tie for third between Andrew Pan and 17 year-old Michael Ngo. Eleven year-old Adrian Jansen, a Rooty Hill regular, and Shobana Bommireddipalli, the first girl, were next on 7. Director of play, Richard Gastineau-Hills was impressed with Andrew's play. "He is the find of the tournament," he said. Twin brothers, Jacob and Nicholas Plemenuk, won the gold and silver Under 15 medallions from Anthony Viloria while Adriel de Torre, the lone Under 13 competitor won gold. Adrian Jansen won the U12 gold from George Besai and Jerome Probst while Andrew Pan easily won the Under 9 gold ahead of Shobana Bommireddipalli and another girl, Mirakla Mirathlan. Councillor Stephen Bali, a driving force behind the Centenary Sports Festival, said, "Chess is particularly significant since it breaks down cultural and age barriers and allows the children to compete on skill and ability. This event gave them a clear choice between playing computer games on their own or playing in a friendly environment and testing their skills." Although the tournament was intended to be a one-off event to celebrate the Centenary year there were so many requests for it to become an annual event that we can look forward to a repeat next year. |
Thank you to Richard Gastineau-Hills who ran the event so smoothly, Gary Payne and Cr. Stephen Bali for making it possible, and to Robert Ambalong, Michael Jansen and Adrian Jansen from Rooty Hill who came along and added their support on the day.
