Chess is not so much a hobby as an obsession for Henry Rara, of Whalan.

His living room is testimony to the hours he spends studying "the sport of kings".

Piles of books on chess strategy and videos of international tournaments dominate shelves.

A chessboard and a timer – for "lightning moves" – take pride of place in a main room.

Despite the paraphernalia, Mr Rara said his addiction was mild compared to others.

"Some get really worked up, they try to intimidate you," Mr Rara said. "For a grand master it is a whole life of study."

Mr Rara maintains balance in his life by running a car detailing business and spending time with his wife and two children, neither of whom have inherited his passion for chess.

"I tried to teach one of my daughters, but it is not something you learn quickly," he said.

On Monday nights, Mr Rara plays at Rooty Hill Chess Club, where he is also part of a four person tournament team.

Last year they won the Sydney championships.

"My play has improved since joining the club," he said.

Mr Rara "got serious" about chess when a professor at his college encouraged him to enter a tournament.

"Chess is more popular overseas. In (his native) Philippines, they have four grand masters," he said.
