Tony Bouchaaya

Protecting kings from enemy forces is a passionate hobby for Rooty Hill Chess Club Champion, Tony Bouchaaya.

This is the third time the Doonside resident has won the crown in four years.

He won by sacrificing a key piece for a pawn during the mind-boggling final game on November 21.

The strategic move critically weakened the defence of 2001 winner, Hans Muller.

A consistently formidable opponent, Bouchaaya represented Lebanon four times at the Chess Olympiad before emigrating to Australia at the end of the 1980's.

The nature of the game has always attracted him.

"It's a competitive game but unlike other competitive sports you don't actually hurt your opponent," he said.

The owner of a refrigerator servicing business said chess had given him skills that were useful in all areas of life.

"It helps with concentration and maths skills," he said.

"You also have to plan carefully and think ahead."

Rooty Hill Chess Club is one of Sydney's largest, with more than 70 active members.

Club publicity officer David Evans said the game was popular in the area because it appealed to people from a variety of cultures.

"There's a perception that 'westies' only like beer and footy," he said. "There's a huge variety of people and cultures in this area and chess is popular in many of those cultures.

The club welcomes new members and guests.
