IF THE idea of a chess tournament conjures up images of a deathly quiet room filled with players engaged in board combat, you weren't at the Blacktown Centenary Chess tournament.

The tournament, part of Blacktown Council's commemoration of its century of local government, was hosted by Rooty Hill RSL Chess Club.

Bowman Hall was full of the noise of 37 competitors aged six to 17 as they got on enthusiastically with the job of working out game plans and hammering the clocks.

Some might have felt they were mis-matched with their opponents, but not seven-year-old first timer Andrew Pan, who led experienced tournament player Bob Liang, 17, on a dance across the chess board at full speed.

He made Bob work very hard for victory.

The director of play, Richard Gastineau-Hills, was impressed with Andrew's skill.

"He was the find of the tournament," Mr Gastineau-Hills said yesterday.

Bob Liang won the tournament with nine and a half points from 10 games ahead of nine-year-old Joshua Lau.

The tie for third was between Andrew Pan and Michael Ngo, who's 17.

Adrian Jansen, 11, and Shobana Bommireddipalli, tied on seven points in fourth place and twins Jacob and Nicholas Plemenuk won the gold and silver under 15 medallions.

Adriel de Torre was the under 13 champion.

Rooty Hill Chess Club meets at 7pm every Monday.
