THE Rooty Hill Chess Club has shown its members can lock horns with the best from the west.
The club won four out of seven divisions in the Western Suburbs Chess Premiership, which concluded last Thursday.
The premiership involved eight western Sydney clubs playing 68 rounds of chess over 10 weeks. Clubs entered four-person teams into each division, with players ranked under the Australian Chess Federation's points system.
The Rooty Hill club's greatest success was winning the under-1900 division.
Standout players included Leo Tenorio from Mt Druitt. "Leo's games take on the character of chess problems which his opponents find insoluble," said club publicity officer David Evans.
Unrated newcomer Noel Mangrobang of Minchinbury also performed well in his first chess tournament.
Rooty Hill teams also won the under-1700s, under-1400s and under-1200s divisions.
The club finished fourth in the open division, with the tournament's top honours going to Riverstone-based Koala Chess Club, a team that included FIDE master Brian Jones and women's international master Nancy Lane.
The Rooty Hill club meets at the RSL each Monday night from 7pm. Details 4739-2785.
