ROOTY Hill RSL Chess Club was declared winner of the 10-week regional chess championship which ended last week.
The club was one of nine that battled for the Western Suburbs Chess Premiership.
Rooty Hill won four divisional matches out of the seven they played.
Their spokesman said their Under 1900 team was unbeatable with Leo "The Terminator" Tenorio from Mt Druitt.
He said Leo effortlessly solved chess problems his opponents could not in over-the-board play. He said the team was joined by an exciting newcomer, Noel Mangrobang.
"Playing in his first chess tournament Noel showed he is probably the best unrated player in NSW," he said.
Other successful Rooty Hill teams were in the Under 1700s, Under 1400s and Under 1200s divisions.
Their Under 1400s was superior with their team captain Allan Butler winning nine out of 10 games, Eddie Quesada seven and Rolando Gonzales seven.
Their Riverstone-based Koala Chess Club won the Open Division.
Only Parramatta Chess Club was strong enough to catch up with them in the last round but with Koala's Federation Master Brian Jones, women's International Master Nancy Lane, former Australian Champion International Master Gary Lane and talented Tomek Rej in the team they clung to their lead and won. Rooty Hil finished fourth in the division.
The chess club meets at Rooty Hill RSL every Monday from 7pm.
