Noel Mangrobang
Noel Mangrobang
Is he the strongest unrated player in NSW?

Round 1:   Not a great start but sixty-six players is a good result for any club. (One visitor said she expected to find two or three old men grumbling over their chess boards!)
Koala Open won 3-0 with a game to play, yet only Ben Harris actually won. Brian Jones had a forfeit and Nancy Lane won when her opponent's phone rang.
Rooty Hill Open:  Lee Jones kept the family fortunes intact by getting a forfeit against Parramatta, but our other three games were lost.
U1900:  Noel Mangrobang, possibly the best unrated player in NSW, drew with Mel Alejano CLICK HERE to see the game, and Robert Ambalong beat George Smit CLICK HERE. Mounties won the encounter, 2½-1½.
U1700:   An excellent result – Against a strong Wollongong U1800 team and outrated on every board, Rooty Hill won 4-0. Levi Descallar, Henry Rara, Muhamed Buza and Peter Barreca all won. congrats to Peter on his first win with the club.
U1600:  Lost 2½-1½ to Parramatta. Minh Do won and skipper Bill Herreros drew.
U1500:  Another 2½-1½ loss to Parramatta. Yama Mahmoodi picked up a forfeit while Carrie Evans and Shane Burgess slugged out a draw.
U1400:  Rooty Hill beat Parramatta 2½-1½ with wins to Allan Butler and Lloyd Fell and a draw to Eddie Quesada.
U1200:  A whitewash, but no wonder. The U1400 Ryde-Eastwood team's bottom player was rated higher than our top board.

Round 2:   Zamirowski–Tenorio
Black to Play & Win!

Round 2:   With only one home game we had the opportunity for a Lightning Tournament on Monday night. (See the report under "Weekly Tournaments" on the home page.)
OPEN:   Rooty Hill Open lost to Koala Open ½-3½. David Harvey drew with Ben Harris, Jim Holland and Jeff Cabilin lost to Tomek Rej and Brian Jones, while Nancy Lane had another telephone forfeit from Joe Ymalay. I wonder if she hexes her opponents? (Joe's position was reversed the next night when his opponent's phone rang but with no arbiter on hand they played out the game.)
U1900:   Rooty Hill beat Smithfield 2½-1½ but it could have been a clean sweep. Noel Mangrobang settled on a draw in a won game because, unfamiliar with digital clocks, he didn't know there was an additional 15 minutes to come while Joe Ymalay lost on time in a superior position. Robert Ambalong CLICK HERE and Leo Tenorio CLICK HERE both had interesting wins.
U1700:   Lost 2½-1½ to Mounties U1800. Details unknown.
U1600:   Rooty Hill beat Wests 2½-1½ Iliya Dzukic won quickly followed by David Evans whose opponent blundered a pawn, tried to win it back with an unsound pin, then found himself forced to refuse an exchange sacrifice CLICK HERE. Bill Herreros managed a draw and Chris Rust, a piece down on Board 1, found a clever rook sacrifice that, if accepted, would have stalemated.
U1500:   Rooty Hill went down 3-1 to the strong Parramatta U1600 team. Yama Mahmoodi should have been pleased with his win against Ernesto Alberici.
U1400:   Wests won this encounter 3-1 with only Allan Butler able to bring home the bacon. The Lau family would have been well pleased with their results as Joshua won against Lloyd Fell and dad, Tony Lau, beat Rolando Gonzales in the longest game of the night.
U1200:   Playing Parramatta's U1400 team, Michael Jansen won on Board 1 and Mario Maletic drew for a 2½-1½ loss.

Round 3:   No emails were received this week so we can give you only a bare-bones report.
Koala Open: drew 2-2 with Parramatta when Benny Galvez failed to play Nancy Lane's Telstra Gambit. The later stages were intriguing and might have gone either way, but Nancy needed an extra move.
Rooty Hill Open: scored only half a point against Parramatta Open.
U1900: defeated Mounties 3½-½.
U1600: lost to Mounties 3-1. Ilia Dzukic and his opponent staged the chess equivalent of 20-20 cricket when they each played 15 moves in a total of 15 minutes then agreed on a draw. On the next board I accepted a draw from Luka Tubic. I had a passed pawn but Luka's king was more aggressive. The other two games were losses.
U1500: had a good result, scoring 2-2 against Wests U1600.
U1400: defeated Parramatta U1300 3-1.
U1200: had another good result, drawing 2-2 with Wests U1400.
Team captains: Please send a copy of results with any commentary you'd like to include to publicity@rootyhillchess.org.   We'd like to know how your team is going – and who's doing what, and with which, and to whom! The results this week are courtesy of Big Bad Bergil (whoever he is) on Chess Chat Forum.

Round 4:   Only a couple of results in so far from a friendly night at home with four Rooty Hills teams playing each other.
U1900: Honours were even in this 2-2 draw with Wollongong. Jeff Cabilin and Joe Ymalay beat John Mazzieri and Martin Barakat while Leo Tenorio and Robert Ambalong lost to Zelijko Kanostrevac and Barry Cox.
U1600/U1500: Yama Mahmoodi picked a tough opponent in Iliya Dzukic but managed a fairly quick win; Ted Lawrence set up an impressive pawn centre with black but at the cost of development, and walked into some tactical problems CLICK HERE; Carrie Evans, a pawn up against Bill Herreros in a rook and pawn ending was happy with the draw; and Alan Robinson ran out of time one move before Chris Rust mated him.
U1400/U1200: For once Allan Butler didn't get into time trouble—it was Michael Jansen who lost on time; Rolando Gonzales beat Rhys Holland, Eddie Quesada beat Vince Zalac, and Peter Watts beat Adrian Jansen.

Round 5:   Only two results have been received for Round 5: The Rooty Hill U1900s walloped our U1700s 4-0: Jeff Cabilin, Leo Tenorio, Joe Ymalay and Noel Mangrobang beat Levi Descallar, Norrie Tiqui, Henry Rara and Muhammed Buza, respectively. Both those teams now lead their groups as do the U1400s (who lost 3-1 to West Ryde with only Allan Butler on board 1 managing a win) and, by default, the U1200s. Team standings after Round 5 are shown below courtesy DOP Shane Burgess. We received a late game from Mounties stalwart George Smit who has also been playing in the U1900s. This week he played an interesting game against Yama Mahmoodi whose resignation was forced by a last-move oversite under pressure, but by that time George already had the game won CLICK HERE

Round 6:   Congratulations to Koala Chess Club who won the Open grade of the competition.
Koala Open:   Drew 2-2 with Parramatta B. Gary Lane lost to George Xie, Tomek Rej beat Jason Hu, Brian Jones beat Shane Burgess, and Ben Harris lost to Robert Hvistendahl. Parramatta needed to win 3-1 to catch Koala but Benny Galvez and first reserve Arthur Huynh were no shows so Shane Burgess was thrown in on Board 3 with only 35 minutes left on his clock.
Rooty Hill Open:   lost 2½-1½ to Parramatta A. Jim Holland had an interesting win (queen and/or multiple-choice mate) against Lachlan Benson after an early exchange of knight and bishop for rook and two pawns CLICK HERE, while David Harvey, who must be nearly as hard to beat as Tigran Petrosian, drew his game.
U1900:   Comfortably leading, the U1900s beat second-placed Mounties. Leo Tenorio won, Joe Ymalay drew and Robert Ambalong picked up a forfeit.
U1700:   We forfeited on board 1 but Levi Descallar won and Muhammed Buza drew in this 2½-1½ loss to Wollongong U1800. The team are leading the U1700 comp but by only a single point.
U1600:   The team's best win so far—a 3-1 victory over Parramatta. Maybe I should stay away more often! There no details available.
U1500:   We crashed 3-1 to Ryde-Eastwood:   Ken MacGillivray, just back from watching Jana Pittman win gold at the Commonwealth Games, drew with Les Mikolajczyk, and Carrie Evans's unconventional 1...g7 in response to Bird's Opening (1. f4) set up a draw with that Pimpernel of the Pawns, Shane Burgess, this time playing for Ryde.
U1400:   Parramatta moved to within one point of Rooty Hill who lead this competition. The two teams battled out what may have been the deciding match of the competition and Parramatta won 3-1 with only Allan Butler able to win (against Bob Sewell).
U1200:   Forced to play higher-rated teams every week the U1200s had a great draw with Ryde-Eastwood, even after conceding a forfeit on Board 2. Newcomer Steven Stipic beat Alan Marton and Vince Zalac conceded 427 rating points to Manuel Valenzuela but won anyway. Well done!
Other results will be posted as soon as they come to hand.

Round 7:   Arnold Schwarzenegger enjoys playing chess during breaks in filming and co-star Nick Stahl said he had two chairs set up at a board in his trailer: Arnie's is labelled "Winner" the other is labelled "Loser". Leo Tenorio and Big Arnie have something in common—when he sits at the chess board Leo is definitely the Terminator! Check the demolition job he did on Richard Zamirowski THIS WEEK.
We also received two interesting games from Norrie Tiqui. Saboori Farshid lost his way in the end game in this Round 4 game: CLICK HERE, and Rick Carballo's caballo went for an early gallop but Norrie shut the stable door CLICK HERE.
U1900:   A big win. Jeff Cabilin, Leo Tenorio and Joe Ymalay defeated Ameh Mohamed, Richard Zamirowski and Farshid Saboori while Robert Ambalong drew with the rapidly improving Arthur Huynh (who then went on to win the Major event at the Doeberl Cup on the weekend).
U1700:   Another big win. On Board 1 Henry Rara drew with Doug Djukovic while Levi Descallar, Muhammed Buza and Norrie Tiqui defeated Stevan Jovanovic, Max Svalina and Rick Carballo.
U1600:   A 3-1 win to Rooty Hill. My opponent blundered away two pawns in the middle game and I blundered them back in the end game for a draw. Chris Rust also drew (but probably didn't blunder!), Munir Anjum won, and Iliya Dzukic picked up a forfeit.
U1500:   A loss here 1½-2½. Ted Lawrence and Yama Mahmoodi lost to the very experienced Ernesto Alberici and Tony Baldwin, Ken Macgillivray drew, and Carrie Evans won on forfeit.
U1400:   Rolando Gonzales won, Eddie Quesada drew and Allan Butler picked up a forfeit in this 2½-1½ win.
U1200:   Two wins, to Michael Jansen on Board 1 and Steven Stipic on Board 4. Steven is one of the interesting players in this competition and, even unrated, it's unlikely we'll see him playing as low as the U1200s in the Grade Matches.

U1900 – Smithfield Withdrawal:
There were far too many forfeits in Round 7 and this tendency may continue if some players lose interest as their teams slip down the points table and can no longer win. That was apparently not the reason for the following announcement from the Director of Play after Rooty Hill defeated Smithfield U1900 3½-½ last week. Or perhaps it was.
QUOTE
Smithfield U1900 has withdrawn from the competition citing lack of players as 2 are on holidays and 2 have work issues. I discussed possible alternatives with the team captains or delegates in Division B and it was agreed to accept the withdrawal.
I have informed Wollongong, Mounties and Rooty Hill delegates and have no choice but to award 4 point forfeits to Wollongong U1800, Mounties U1800 and Rooty Hill U1700.
Thankfully Rooty Hill U1700 won 3.5-0.5 against Mounties U1700 last Monday night or the withdrawal of Smithfield may have ruined Mounties U1700 chances. I have added the points immediately for all teams so when you see the spreadsheet you'll know where you stand.
UNQUOTE

Round 8:   A truly great chess player isn't one who can overcome all opponents on his way to mastery, but one who can overcome difficulties that would discombombulate a lesser mortal. On that basis our U1200 and U1500 teams may lay claim to greatness after overcoming a plethora of distractions at Wests on Tuesday night. Not only did they have to contend with Leagues Club announcements being piped through the playing area "Number 97 to the snack bar, please" but with a carpet bowls tournament rolling past.
It must have been a week for noise. Three of our teams played at Mount Pritchard on Thursday night and the volume of music booming through the door, interspersed with broadcasts of what was apparently a TV program involving some kind of dispute or argument, made impossible playing conditions. If this sort of thing is a weekly occurrence at Mounties the venue is totally unsuitable for competitive chess and should be eliminated from both the grade matches and next year's WSCP. Perhaps they could volunteer, as Wollongong does, to play their home games at a more suitable venue.
U1900:   Our team are coasting at the top of the table. Jeff Cabillin beat Doug Djukovic, Leo Tenorio beat Rick Carballo, and Robert Ambalong had an easy win against Slavko Trkulja. Slavko plays a lot better than this game suggests and I assume he was totally thrown by the excessive noise. See what you think: CLICK HERE
U1700:   An even result finishing 2-2. Peter Barreca and Norrie Tiqui won.
U1600:   A comfortable 3-1 victory with wins to Munir Anjum, Iliya Dzukic, and Bill Herreros.
U1500:   Playing Wests U1600 team Ted Lawrence notched up his first win. He's a far stronger player than his results this competition show and it's good to see him back in form. Yama Mahmoodi was the other winner while Ken MacGillivray and Carrie Evans each drew on boards 3 and 4.
U1400:   Allan Butler, Rolando Gonzales and Eddie Quesada all won for a 3-1 victory. This team are leading their competition by 1½ points. They only need to keep up their consistent form to take first place, but must be careful of Ryde, Parramatta and Wests who are snapping at their heels.
U1200:   Held Wests U1400 team 2-2 with wins to Michael Jansen and Mario Maletic.

Round 9:   Because of an error in the WSCP booklet our U1700s turned up on Monday night expecting to play Smithfield U1700 only to find that they should have been playing the U1900s who had already withdrawn from the competition.
U1900:   A comfortable 2½-1½ win against Wollongong's U1800s. Leo Tenorio and Joe Ymalay won and Jeff Cabilin drew.
U1700:   Effortlessly, 4-0. A team forfeit.
U1600:   Munir Anjum won the exchange early and converted that into a two rook advantage before winning a very long game. Iliya Dzukic won fairly quickly, I picked up a forfeit on Board 1, and Shane Burgess won a point for Ryde-Eastwood on the bottom board. Score 3-1 to Rooty Hill.
U1500:   A handy 2½-1½ win against Mounties. Yama Mahmoodi had a good win against the wily Luka Tubic who is always a tough nut to crack, Carrie Evans down the exchange and in a difficult position pushed a couple of pawns and turned the tables on Radisav Ivanovic while skipper Ken MacGillivray managed a draw with George Smit.
U1400:   Beat our U1200s 3-1. Wins to Allan Butler, Rolando Gonzales and Eddie Quesada.
U1200:   See U1400. The interesting games for this team were on Boards 1 and 4. Michael Jansen lost on time in a dead even struggle with Allan Butler (who knows all about time trouble) and Vince Zalac had a handy win against Peter Watts.

Round 10:   Congratulations to the U1900s, U1700s, U1400s and U1200s who all won their divisions. The U1600s also had a chance to win, but needed to win 4-0 this week against our U1500s who wouldn't cooperate.
This week saw five teams play at Rooty Hill including two local derbies between our own teams — U1900 vs U1700, U1600 vs U1500, and our U1400s played Parramatta. On Thursday our U1200s played away at Parramatta.
U1900 vs U1700:   Levi Descallar beat Jeff Cabilin on the top board, but the other three games all went to the U1900s. Joe Ymalay beat Norrie Tique, Robert Ambalong beat Muhamed Buza and Leo Tenorio picked up a forfeit.
U1600 vs U1500:   This 2-0 draw was a fair result. There isn't much difference between the two teams. Chris Rust beat Yama Mahmoodi on Board 1, Iliya Dzukic beat Carrie Evans on Board 4, but the two middle games went to the U1500s with Ted Lawrence beating David Evans and Ken MacGillivray beating Munir Anjum. Munir had an interesting struggle against Ken whose wall of pawns spread so wide that Munir had no chance of holding them back.
U1400s:   Aided by a forfeit on Board 4 the team swamped Ryde-Eastwood 4-0. Allan Butler, Rolando Gonzales and Eddie Quesada all won which is not surprising considering their overall performance throughout the competition:  Allan won 9/10, Eddie won 7½/10, and Rolando won 7/10. U1200s:   Michael Jansen won on the top board and Mario Maletic drew on Board 2. With a full team this could have been the best result of the competition but regrettably we forfeited on the bottom two boards.
