With seven teams nominated for this year's WSCP we were almost certain to pick up a few wins and this proved to be the case.

The U1700 Knights—Rick Carballo, Doug Djukovic, Stevan Jovanovic & Henry Rara—won their division and did it so well that they finished in front of the two U1800 teams, thus preventing either of those teams winning a prize. Doug also won the individual prize for top score.
The U1400s Ken MacGillivray, Rolando Gonzales, Eddie Quesada & Lloyd Fell won their section. If the club had a cheerful award it would probably go to Rolando who certainly had something to smile about after winning the top score prize.
The U1300s David Van Look, Peter Watts, Vince Zalac, Rhys Jones & Ben Zalac won without surprising anybody. They were the only U1300 team in the competition. But in winning they finished in front of a couple of U1400 teams and claimed some good scalps along the way. Rhys is only 12 and Ben had his 9th birthday during the competition. Peter Watts won the performance prize for this team.

Two other teams needed only a little luck to win. The U1800s and U1500s both missed out on first place by only half a point! It was a mighty effort.

Our open team hit some tough opposition and finished 5th in Division A.
In Division B the U1800s finished ahead of Mounties U1800s but behind our own U1700 Knights. The U1700 Bishops finished 6th.
In Division C the U1500s gave themselves every chance to win but finished second, just half a point behind Fairfield. The U1400s and U1300s were also in this section.

Here is a full list of the individual prize winners.

Congratulations to all players and to all winners. Below is a week-by-week report on the competition.
NOW bring on the Grade Matches!

WSCP Presentation & Lightning
In a big field of 43 players, Johny Bolens raced away from his opposition with seven straight wins before finishing with two draws (against Jason Chan and Samir Bajrami) in the last two rounds. He won by a clear point. Jason was right behind with Edgardo Agulto on 7 points followed by Branislev Vojvodic on 6.5.

Best placed Rooty Hill player was Peter Cassettari who tied for 5th place with 6 points, just ahead of Jim Holland and Paul Laurance.

Full marks to Shane Burgess and the Fairfield Chess Club for hosting such a successful night.

Round 1: Our U1300 team were always certain of winning their competition because they're the only team in it—but if this week was any indication they may have their sights set on the U1400 comp as well. Their defeat of Rooty Hill U1400 was impressive with wins on Boards 2, 3, & 4.
The U1800s also had a convincing win over the Rooty Hill U1700 Bishops. On the top board Robert Ambalong sacrificed the exchange when Ernesto Alberici's king was home alone (check it out here) while on the bottom board Raj Ramachandran's knight plunged fearlessly into the fray, forking Chris Rust's queen, rook and knight, but safe from capture because of the threatened mate. Click here to see the game.
In the other game decided tonight, the U1700 Knights held Mt Pritchard to a draw, 2-2. Congratulations all round.

Round 2 was a night of big wins, and equally big losses. Our Open team lost 3-1 to Parramatta. The bright point was Joe Ymalay's handy win against Vasil Tulevsky. Paul Laurance was unlucky to lose on Board 3. Had he played 29...Bxh3 the game was virtually all over with a win for black (click here to see it) but, he said, "I let him bluff me out of it."
The U1700 Knights surprised our U1800 team 4-0 and (I think) the U1700 Bishops lost to Parramatta. (I'll update that when the official results come in.)
The U1500s didn't have it all their own way against the U1400.s They won 3-1 but Rolando Gonzales had a handy win against Frank Kresinger. At the bottom of the rating table the U1300s still haven't worked out that they're the under-dogs and continued their good form with a draw against Parramatta U1400. Ben Zalac (at 8 years of age) must have wanted to play in the Allegro as well because he won in less than 30 minutes, while Rhys Holland (he's 12) found a way to win a difficult endgame with opposite-coloured bishops.

Round 3 left Sydney Academy and Parramatta leading Division 1 on 5.5. Rooty Hill's match with Koala was full of interest with Jim Holland unlucky to lose on time when in a winning position against Tomek Rej. Joe Ymalay (Rooty Hill) beat David Harvey (Koala), Paul Laurance lost to Brian Jones and you can Click here to see the game.
Division 2 saw our U1700 Knights defeat our U1700 Bishops 3-1, while the U1800s went down 3-1 to Liverpool.
In Division 3 the U1400s lost 3.5/.5 to Mounties, the U1300s went down 3-1 to Fairfield U1500 (a win to Vicente Reyes).

Rooty Hill Chess Club
Western Sydney Chess Premiership – Rooty Hill
David Harvey wasn't involved—he was in the Allegro.

Round 4 brought together the largest group of players we've seen at the club for a very long time. With seven visiting teams we had fifty-six people playing in the WSCP matches as well as an allegro running on the side.
Three of the most interesting games were drawn. In the Open Tony Bouchaaya was able to force a draw with Raoul Samar; in the longest game of the night Levi Descallar (U1800) managed a draw against Frank Barisic in a bishop & pawn ending. Ken McGillivray's Scottish ancestry won through in his game when his king (like Robert the Bruce lurking in his cave) hid behind his opponent's advanced pawn. Ken overcame the disadvantage of a bad bishop vs a strong knight for a good half point.
Rick Carballo had the misfortune to lose the shortest game when he tried to hang on to a gambit pawn against the wily Eddy Katnic. He was kind enough to share the game with us. If you want to see how a strong player can lose in eight moves, click here.
Our Open team lost 3.5/.5 to Fairfield while the U1800s also lost 3.5/.5 to Smithfield U1900. The U1700 Knights drew 2/2 with Liverpool and the U1700 Bishops lost 1.5/2.5 to Mounties U1800.
The U1500s had a handy 3/1 against Fairfield, and the U1400s did even better (3.5/.5) against Parramatta. The U1300s found themselves matched against Wests' U1600 team. It should have been a whitewash but they managed 1.5/2.5 for a very creditable result. Ben Zalac may have been unlucky. He held an early advantage but his opponent had too much experience.
Click here to see Jim Holland's game against Ed Agulto. Tony Bouchaaya with black drew with Raoul Samar and you can see it here.

Paul Laurance
Paul Laurance

One very interesting game from Round 4 which, unfortunately, was a Rooty Hill loss, was Paul Laurance's game with black against Naz Cabale. Click here to see the game.
Paul supplied the following comments.
14. ... Rhe8! was much stronger. White cannot hold e5.
17. ... Rd7?! unnecessary. Black already controls the d file. Doubling is a waste of time.
18. ... Rhd8 see above
19. Bd5 regains some measure of control over the d-file. e6 to regain the exchange becomes a threat.
. ... Ne7 weakens the defences. White conducts the attack well from here on.
. ... Rd6? self-mate anyone? 22. Nc5! Black had only seen Na5. Now it's all over.

Round 5   Our U1800s lost 2.5/1.5 to Mount Pritchard. Leonardo Tenorio won against Zoran Petkovic who obviously adheres to the adage "Never miss a check, it might be mate." On this occasion it wasn't and the exercise cost him a rook. If you rub the genie's lamp here you can see the game.
Another entertaining game was Paul Laurance's loss to Brett Tindall. It's the sort of thing you'd rather happened to somebody else but Paul was good enough to share it with us. See it here.
Results for Round 5 (the figure shown is Rooty Hill's score out of 4): Open vs Sydney Academy .5, U1800 vs Mounties U1800 1.5, U1700 Knights vs Smithfield .5, U1700 Bishops vs Liverpool 2, U1500 vs Wests U1600 .5, U1400 vs vs Fairfield 2 and U1300 vs WESTS U1400 2.
Some clubs have been tardy sending in their results so we can't give you definite placings but the U1700 Knights, U1500s and U1300s look best placed of our teams and all could take first place in their rating group.

Eddie Quesada

Round 6   When our U1800 team won 2.5/1.5 this week against our U1700 Bishops Muhamed Buza's Sicilian ran into trouble against Leonardo Tenorio and you can find the game here. The U1500s drew with Wests U1400 while the U1400s played well to draw with the same club's U1600s—Rolando Gonzales and Eddie Quesada won on boards 2 and 3 despite a wide rating gap. The U1300s had a big ask against Mount Pritchard's U1600s and if the score was predictable the play wasn't. All four games were very close and could have gone either way with only Vince Zalac able to hold on for a draw.

Leonardo Tenorio

Round 7   Once in a John Wayne movie when a minor character said, "It was only a friendly fight," the Duke replied, "I've never had one of those." Chess is a bit like that. In Division B our U1700 Knights demolished our U1800s 4-0 in Round 2 (a most unfriendly thing to do) only to have the tables turned for a 4-0 loss against the same team in Round 7. Worse than that, last year's winning U1800 team captain Robert Ambalong whupped his old team mate Henry Rara whose knight strayed too close to the side of the board in a tight end game. Robert locked the stable door before the horse could bolt and you can see it HERE. Leonardo Tenorio managed to inflict GBH on Stevan Jovanovic's king in a clever tactical spree. You'll enjoy this one: Click here. We've had so many of Leo's games lately we'll put his picture up as well. Thanks Leo.  The U1300s had a tough task this week against our U1500s who played up to their strength and won convincingly 3-1. Full marks to Peter Watts who won on Board 1. (For the information of those who asked — and they did ask! — GBH is grievous bodily harm.)

Round 7 also marked the end of play for our U1300 and U1400 teams but not before they had won their individual competitions. Congratulations to the U1400s who scored 13 points to win this section ahead of our U1300s on 11 (a great effort) followed by Wests U1400 on 9.5 and Parramatta U1400 who scored 7 points. And here's Paul Laurance's game against Branko Vojvodic. Click here.

Round 8:   The U1800s had a great 4-0 result against Liverpool's U1700s. It was no mean feat considering Liverpool's strength. The U1800s have problems getting four players each week and Raj Ramachandran (rated 1546) has filled in so ably that he hasn't yet lost a game, conceding two draws and winning the rest. Robert Ambalong sent in the following win against Krsti Blazetski.. It's an interesting game to play through. See it here. In the other results we have to hand our U1700 Knights beat our U1700 Bishops 3-1, with two wins and two draws. The Rooty Hill Open team went down 4-0 to Koala Chess Club which boasted an IM and two FMs. The feature of that match was Tony Bouchaaya's tough game against Australian champion Gary Lane on board 1. We don't have a copy of the game but we do have a fascinating exchange between Lee Jones and Paul Laurance. Click here. Thanks for sending it in, Paul.

Round 9:   Only one result has come in at the time of writing. On Tuesday our U1800s went down 3-1 to Smithfield's very strong U1900 team who have blitzed this division and will be runaway winners. They didn't have it all their own way this week because Robert Ambalong was able to fly the Rooty Hill flag. He sacrificed a knight to double rooks on the seventh rank for a neat win. Here's the game.   This wasn't a great round for Rooty Hill with our Open and U1500 teams both losing to Fairfield. Three of our remaining teams can win their division but must win well in Round 10—these are the U1800s, the U1700 Knights and U1500s. Click here to see Naz Cabale vs Paul Laurance.

Round 10:   The U1700 Knights just lost to Smithfield U1900 (1.5/2.5) with Doug Djukovic defeating Vasil Tulevski. The result was probably enough to win them the competition but we are waiting for confirmation. Our Open team went down 4-0 to Sydney Academy and we can bring you Paul Laurance's game against Brett Tindall if you click here. It was an interesting game and could have gone either way until Paul's king decided to take a royal tour and shake hands with a few peasants.   The U1700 Bishops lost 3-1 to Liverpool (Chris Rust won his game), and the U1800s won 3-1 against Mounties U1800. Robert Ambalong lost to Mel Alejandro, two games were won on forfeit, and Leonardo Tenorio won in 14 moves after his impulsive queen charged down the board on move 5 and took up residence in black's territory. Here's the game.

The results table below shows the participating teams and the total points scored by them. Those teams shown in bold face type won their rating division. Although it looks as though the lower teams in Division C scored very poorly it should be noted that only four teams played the full ten rounds. For the others the competition ended after round 7.

Open Points   Division B Points   Division C Points
  Koala     19.5   Smithfield U1900     31   Mounties U1600     24.5

        Liverpool U1700     17.5   Rooty Hill U1300     11
              Wests U1400       9.5
