Myself When Young
Harry Lamb vs Brian Jones – 1985

Tony Bouchaaya with Garry Kasparov – 1986
Somebody once said that inside every older person there's a younger person wondering what happened! I was reminded of that quote this week when I received this photograph of the young Brian Jones
The photograph was taken in 1985. Brian, playing for Sheffield League (SDCA) has the white pieces. His opponent is Harry Lamb of Bolton representing Manchester league (MDCA). The young lad looking over Brian's shoulder is not Lee Jones, as I at first thought, but young Lamb.
Although they've already been posted on the Rooty Hill site over the past two years we also have available two old photographs of club members.
The slim, good-looking young man with an equally slim, good-looking young Kasparov is our own Tony Bouchaaya. This was taken at the Dubai Olympiad in 1986 where Tony represented Lebanon.
The final photograph of the three shows Lajos Portisch giving a simul at the Maroczy Chess Club, just off Railway Square, Sydney, in 1971. I was playing the second board from the bottom at a time when my beard was still brown and my hair was plentiful.

Doctor and Saint, and heard great argument
About it and about; but evermore
Left by the same door as in I went.
